Today I learned...

  • Today is Steve Martin's 70th birthday. One of my favourite books is Born Standing Up. It's a glimpse into what it takes to be a stand up comedian.
  • Ummm... We discovered a new planet today. What does that mean exactly? Scientists have discovered a world at least 1.3 times as massive as Earth orbiting the closest star to the sun: Proxima Centauri, a dim red orb about 4.2 light-years away. Dubbed Proxima b, the planet is cozied up to its star, needing just 11.2 days to complete one orbit. But despite the proximity to its star — just 5 percent of the distance from Earth to the sun — Proxima b is potentially habitable. Its temperature is just right for liquid water to flow on its surface. That makes Proxima b the closest known world outside our solar system where life might exist.
